I was just watching TV and saw a commercial for Avodart.
Avodart is a medication used to help men with prostate problems, not prostate cancer, but enlarged prostate issues, that can result in urinary issues among other things.
During the commercial the commentary states “this medication is for men only. women should not take or handle this medication due to a specific birth defect.”
Say what?!
What is this specific birth defect???? I had to know why they didn’t just come out and say it, since it was so specific…so I resorted to google and this is what I found.
Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: liver disease, urinary tract disease, prostate cancer, any allergies. Men taking this medication should not donate blood until at least 6 months after they have stopped taking it to prevent exposure through a blood transfusion to a pregnant female. Since this drug can be absorbed through the skin, women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant should not handle this medication. Any contact with this drug by a pregnant woman could result in abnormal external sex organs of a developing male fetus. This medication should not be used in women or children. Dutasteride (aka Avodart) must not be used during pregnancy. If you become pregnant or think you may be pregnant, inform your doctor immediately. It is not known whether this drug passes into breast milk. However, this medication should not be used in women.
ABNORMAL EXTERNAL SEX ORGANS?!?! Oh man – if that’s the side effect on women, who even just TOUCH the meds, why would a man even consider taking it??? Man…this is some scary stuff that the ‘boards of whatever’ approve.
