I don’t know if I’ve written about this in this blog yet, but I’ve been trying to start something ‘on-the-side’. You know, another way of rolling in the dough besides my and TH’s 9-5 gig.
I tried Etsy – I put some of my photos up for sale there and more recently I put up some custom digital announcements. I sold one photo (for $20 nonetheless) … and well, it was a nice feeling… but it’s not dependable.
So, I decided to pursue photography a little more … since I would consider myself new at this, I’ve offered out my services for free this month so that I could build a portfolio.
I recently had the opportunity to photograph a newborn. I told my mom I was doing this, and she told a friend who told a friend, and that’s how I got the gig.
I was nervous as hell… I’ve never really been around newborns, well, besides my niece, and she’s 7 now. Not to mention, I was meeting this baby and his mother for the first time. I have never photographed newborns either, so I really had no idea what to do – how to pose, can I use flash, do I bring props…
Well, I had about 1 week to prepare, and I went to Target and bought a basket, some white towels and a black rug. I also bought a white feather boa at Michaels craft store and some other cute props (but for girls).
The shoot went better than I had expected… The woman I met with was supremely nice and welcoming. She seemed to trust me with her little one and even commented that she wouldn’t let just anybody take photos of her baby.
Anyway, there were definitely some lessons learned during this shoot, and I think the photos came out pretty decent for my first try!
Here are just a few –
What a cute baby boy!!!
