Letting go.

Going through this process of ‘simplifying’ our house has been quite an ordeal. It really makes you look at every single item and it’s value to you. We found things we didn’t even know we had and others we didn’t want to let go of b/c even though they serve no purpose in our life — we felt someday they might.

For example. The 100 (or so) VHS tapes TH had. It was difficult to part with them. I know it. Maybe it was just because as soon as I ‘discovered’ them I threatened to throw them all out. I know he hasn’t watched any in about 6 years, but his validation was — but what if someday I want to. You never know. It’s not easy, so I give him credit for getting rid of most of them — well, after I had already put them in a garbage bag.

I spoke to my Viola teacher who just so happens to not really believe that DVDs are a better technology and prefers VHS tapes. She actually uses them and records a lot on them, so we will freecycle these to her. :-) It feels good.

There is something that has been very difficult for me to part with, and that is my wedding bouquet, from almost 2 years ago. It has fully dried out and it’s been hanging around in our dining room in a plant pot looking old and blah. It even still has the tissue I hid in it (b/c I didn’t have pockets in my wedding dress). Kinda gross, but it was never used.

Here is TH, all happy that it’s finally going in the trash…

It’s time to let go. Goodbye dear bouquet.

We managed to get that crazy corner organized. Alas, there are still some things we need to ‘hide’. Like, the set of doggie steps, the bin of doggie toys, the CONE vacuum (that really sucks b/c it doesn’t suck), and the gray weather clock thing we never look at…

I hoping we can keep the tray tables and sub-woofer out. Oh yeah, and I’d like to keep the lil’white doggie too.

Oooh and just because I’m so proud of how far we’ve come in this ’1′ day… here’s a photo of the boxes we filled that TH gets the honor or relocating to the garage :-) . I <3 U, TH!

the longer you keep things you don’t use…the harder it is to get rid of them! I like to throw things out!…If I don’t use it…i toss it…my husband has to hide his stuff..lol

You hit the nail on the head there, Tanya — I’m starting to like the process of just chucking things out. I am not as overly analytical about ‘where it’s going to end up’ as much as my husband is, so that makes it a little easier.

I am the opposite of a pack-rat. I have no problem getting rid of anything, lol. Ryan, on the other hand, is obsessed with keeping all of his stuff. He’s crazy.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who thinks it feels good to get rid of all that stuff!

Your last comment to me about fear was like a description right out of my own head. That’s pretty much exactly how I feel.

Bah, I hate cleaning and going through old things. I either throw out almost everything that I own or I think I need to keep things I don’t need. There’s never a happy medium. As long as I don’t end up on Hoarders, I’m happy.

Looks like you did a good job “simplifying”. I remember when we tossed out all our old VHS tapes. I’m a little disappointed now that we got rid of a couple of them, but they’re not missed for the most part.

When throwing out VHS, I find it comforting to know that the tapes won’t last forever anyway. That or my VCR won’t.
