26 Week Doctor Appts – long-ish

On Thursday I had to go to 2 doctor appts.

A 3-hour O’Sullivan sugar test to see if I have gestational diabetes (no results yet) .. it was easy. Fasted for 10 hours. Got blood drawn at 8am, then drank about 12oz of this super sweet partially carbonated drink within 5 minutes. Then get blood drawn each hour for the next 3 hours. I thought I was going to have to drink that stuff 3 x’s, and was worried I would pass out. I think anyone would after having to fast before hand then drink that first thing in the morning. It was nothing though, really.

Then after being there for over 3 hours — hubby and niece in tow — we went to the hospital antenatal testing unit and had our 26 week cervix and growth scan. Cervix lookin’ good – lol – meaning the babes don’t look like they’ll be coming any time soon and there is no need for me to be put on bedrest or antyhing. Growth scan showed both babes measuring the same at 2lb 1oz each. They are BOTH head down and their heads are very close and touching. BIZARRE!!!

We couldn’t see Summer’s face b/c she is facing down but we saw Kara, and she was chowing down on her entire hand. We watched her sucking it and also opening her mouth, super freakin’ wide (will post bizarr-o pics soon) … it creeped me out, even moreso seeing it in 3D — She looks like any other baby I’ve seen on a 3-D scan.

They have over a 70% chance of survival if they were to arrive now. Which they won’t arrive now, b/c they seem to be comfy where they are. Also, since they are both head down, if they stay that way, my chances to have a V-birth are pretty high. I have always thought of having a C-section, b/c who voluntarily likes to go through hours and hours of pain … but then logic kicked in, and recovery from that is quicker and more natural than having a C-section. So right now I’m pro V-birth. WITH pain meds , please.

At the OB appt, they weighed me. No weight gain in over a month, I actually seem to have lost more weight. The doc I saw this time was the first one to seem concerned. But after hearing that I eat 3 meals a day, she didn’t think it was too bad. If I don’t gain in the next 2 weeks, they want me to see a nutritionist. Which is fine. She wants me to eat bananas (i’m allergic) and cheese chunks (eww) and bagels w/creamcheese (watching the carbs b/c I have an insulin resistance – aka, could get diabetes). But I did manage to consume an entire package of Ore.os by myself within 2 weeks. Which I think is A LOT. The babes are measuring abt a week ahead size-wise (and those measurements are rarely ever 100% accurate). So, we seem to be just fine.

My general practitioner seems to think I have a Subclinical Thyroid problem. Meaning the babies are supplementing me in ways I couldn’t supplement myself. Hence the feeling really freakin’ good and not having weight issues, and also their pancreases helping me out with my insulin resistance problem. Since during pregnancy your insulin resistance is supposed to become WORSE, mine has gotten better.

She warned that they can’t test for this stuff now, but what could happen is a few months after birth I can crash, and the docs will write it off as post-partum depression or a normal crash b/c I have to deal with twins — when in reality it could be a thyroid issue. I was told to get in touch with an endocrinologist now just to consult about it.

Besides that — my niece was over and her MRSA took a toll for the worst that same day, a new blister/sore appeared near her current wound, and her docs said we had to bring her in right away. In to her doctors office which is 1.5 hours away… and I was tired from all my appts, but you gotta do whatchu gotta do.

She wound up going to the ER to get checked out, then the next day she saw a specialist at an Infectious Disease care place. They said MRSA does this, new sores can appear and then go away, no worries. Phew. And they kept her on the same antibiotic and it seems we’re good to go. The more I learn about MRSA, the less afraid of it I am. I always here horror stories about staph infections, but we seem to be managing this one really well. :-)

And that is all the doctor appt updates I have. Wanted to jot it down so I can one day look back on everything … ah, memories.

“Meaning the babies are supplementing me in ways I couldn’t supplement myself.” that is so cool!

It is cool and kind of freaky! They are like ‘my cure’ … Too bad it can’t last forever!

Just catching up today – so scary that your niece had to go through all that! Glad to hear she is on the mend. Interesting stuff about subclinical thyroid issues – I actually think that could apply to me as well. I also felt super good when preggers, but that was also a LONG time ago – much younger, LOL. Also did not have any postpartum issues, thank goodness. Just got some bloodwork done recently and we should catch up and chat about that sometime soon… Very glad to hear the babes are growing well and snug in their places!!!
